Congratulations to all of the teams that competed at our 2015 Regional Tournament! The final results for all problems are listed further down on this page. All first-place teams are invited to compete at the Virginia State Tournament in April.
We also presented four special awards at the Closing Ceremonies. The Ranatra Fusca Award represents the essence of Odyssey of the Mind and is presented to teams or individuals who exhibit exceptional creativity. The OMER’s Award is presented to teams or individuals who particularly exemplify the spirit and philosophy of the Odyssey program, demonstrate exceptional skill or talent, or exhibit outstanding sportsmanship or teamwork. Here are the full announcements for those awards:
OMER’S Award – Leslie Schmidt, Primary Spontaneous Judge
This judge took the lead to organize all of the new judges for his problem/division to help them understand the problem, relieving the problem captains from this responsibility.
All of the judges were first-time judges, except for him. He gathered them together, went over the problem and answered questions about how to judge. This judge went above and beyond what he signed up to do – judge – and provided on-the-job training, all with a huge smile.
In this year, where training was a challenge because of the weather issues, this volunteer’s initiative and efforts were greatly appreciated by the Problem Captains and contributed to a better experience for the children competing in the primary division.
RANATRA FUSCA Award – Pandora’s Box Division 1B team from Chesterbrook Elementary School
This team’s power meter was driven by an invisible mechanism that was even more amazing after the judges saw how it worked. Although the requirement of the problem was for it to work three times, this meter worked continuously throughout the entire skit.
It was the only animated power meter the judges saw all day and was integrated into the team created character and his performance.
The canine gamer character used the power meter to reflect his energy level, with his tail hanging down when his energy level was low, rising and wagging when his energy level was high. It was truly representative of what a dog’s tail does. The team choreographed the gamer’s movements to make sense in the play while driving the mechanism of the meter. As the canine gamer moved his paws, he activated a string attached to his tail. The whole seamlessness of the gamer character and the meter were amazing,
OMER’S Award – Caitlin O’Brien , Head Judge for Silent Movie, Problem 5
After a head judge left mid-day because of health issues, the head judge from a different division offered to take over the duties and responsibilities for that division in addition to her own.
This head judge met with coaches from both her division and the other division to explain scoring, served as a resource for both judging teams and kept both sites running smoothly for the rest of the day. Without her efforts, the teams in the division with the head judge who needed to withdraw would not have experienced the Regional Tournament as it was meant to be.
RANATRA FUSCA Award – Silent Movie Division 3 team from South Lakes High School
This team is being nominated for its performance in its spontaneous competition. Because this is a spontaneous problem, we can’t say exactly what the team did that was so exceptional, but the judging team was blown away by the team’s creativity, risk-taking, and the way they created an inter-connected evolution of answers that the judges did not anticipate. The team excelled in ways that could not be rewarded with just points.
